Doodle: Consistency

Do Tiger Woods & David Beckham Have Anything in Common?

We’ve discussed that “bad genetics” are of little significance when you apply the most important secret of success, consistency. Today I want to look at talent.

David Beckham and Tiger Woods, 2 highly successful athletes who don’t seem to have much in common except that they have a lot of money and cheated their wives. That aside, they have a very different style: one plays soccer, the other golf; one is a fashion victim, the other dresses normal; etc.

Most people are quick to say that these guys are successful because they’re talented. But pay attention to this quote by Alex Ferguson, David Beckham‘s early mentor and coach at Manchester United, “[Beckham] practiced with a discipline to achieve an accuracy that other players wouldn’t care about”.

The secret to Beckham’s free kick accuracy is that he practiced for hours. He even maintained his training routine when he had issues with the management of Real Madrid in 2007. Beckham could have taken a break, tell them to go to hell, heck he got the money anyway. Yet he chose to remain consistent.

Tiger Woods, reputed for practicing more than his competitors AND responsible for the shift to higher standards of athleticism amongst pro golfers. What do you think he did the day after he won the 2000 PGA championship? Take a well-deserved break? No, he was back on the range – practicing. In his NY Times bestseller, “Outliers,” Malcolm Gladwell stresses that the key to success in any field is a matter of practicing for a total of 10,000 hours.

Woods and Beckham have been practicing for +25y. They’ve amassed well over 10,000 hours.

You put in those hours, and I guarantee you, you’ll be as good as them. These guys aren’t different than you or me. There is nothing that they have that you lack. Consistency is their REAL secret, it’s what turns them into “talents”, and it’s a powerful law of success that you can apply starting today.
