Tips on Creative Writing for PT3 & SPM

I am a writing hobbyist especially in short creative writings. Here is one of my favourite writing!

Some may say that I am a talented writer, puhhhliesssss, I don’t believe in talents. I believe in hard works, day in day out practices and commitments. It was not all rainbows and sunshine.

In fact, I think I am the worst writer around!

So to help you be better in creative writings, below are some tips and guides you may follow. Just try, it may work on you as it did on me!

1. Write for your reader to enjoy the story!

If you are writing for a homework or exam, focus more on entertaining your reader than spending too much time thinking of the right grammar for higher marks. (I AM NOT SAYING YOU  SHOULD OMIT GRAMMAR ERRORS - Grammar Nazi)
"Write to serve others, and the rest will come along."
- Michele Ramli 2017 lololololol
Put your readers a priority. Make them feel engaged!

2. Use the 5W 1H
Who, Where, What, Why, When and How. Let these be the guide to plan your story

Here is one example 5W 1H to create THIS STORY.
Note: I used 5W1H as a guide in my idea development prompts only

3. Have a plot curve
A good writing applies the plot curve below.

Mind blown your reader with an interesting climax.

4. Plan ahead (especially during exams)
With the plot curve above and 5W1H to guide you, take 5-10minutes to plan your story before jumping into the blank paper.
There is nothing worst than already spending 10 minutes writing a paragraph, then erasing the whole thing just because the sequence it wrong. AHHHH! NIGHTMARE.

5. Include idiomatic expressions
…such as metaphors, personifications, similes, and hyperbole. Idioms like these as well!

You may read and memorise the examples of all of these, but the best ones are the one you made creatively!

6. Make it compact, but impactful
There is nothing more annoying than a boring and dragging essay. Try to make your writing detailed, BUT compact and impactful. It will intrigue the readers and make them keep on reading.

7. Give some vivid visual descriptions
To have a vivid, impactful and interesting writing, describe with the six senses.

How do you FEEL, what do you SEE, HEAR, SMELL, TOUCH and TASTE. These details will make your reader feel immersed in the universe of your story.

8. Read, read, and read
There is no other cure for a better writing than tons of time spent reading. With lots of reading inputs, then you will be able to grind some creative outputs in your writing!
BUT, you HATE READING? Me too!
So what is the trick, you ask me?
Well one of my best trick is to find an essay that I think is the most creative and very appalling, then I print it out and read it again and again, and, again until I am able to create a writing that is almost as creative and appalling.
It takes time and pratices, so that brings me to my next point which is…

9. Practice everyday.
Creativity is a habit, not a one day sudden magic.

Creative people does everything in their life creatively, daily. So if you think you can be creative in a day, you can’t! You can only be creative by repeating doing creative things everyday.

Even our body needs daily showers. So does creativity, it need practices! So practice as much as you can.

DID YOU KNOW? The colour ORANGE(in a room/office) and GREEN can boost creative performance.

10. Use understandable words
I know that your teachers told you to use bombastic words, but no one will want to keep on reading an essay that they need to look at the dictionary too many times. Use big words, but at a moderately.

11. Be different and original!
It is okay to do writings which are inspired by other creative essays once in awhile, but they won’t be the ‘best sellers in the market’.

Your readers/teachers will get bored reading plagiarised writings.

So by hook or by crook, try to make your writings as original, and as innovative as possible. Then you will be able to shine among the dull and labored writings out there.

I hope these tips will help you in your creative writing adventure!
(especially those who are sitting for PT3 & SPM!)
GOOD LUCK!
